All gardeners are welcome at this presentation, both lazy and non-lazy. Looking for a way to beat the winter blues? Looking for an inexpensive way to start new plants? Try winter sowing! This presentation will take you through the steps, materials needed, and timing of winter sowing. This method of seed-starting is so easy, you’ll be amazed at how many hardy plants you’ll have when spring arrives. We will cover Frequently Asked Questions and get your hands dirty in the middle of winter. Lots of fun!
Winter sowing is a method of starting seeds outdoors in the winter—yes, even in the snow and freezing temps—using mini greenhouses made from recycled containers like milk jugs or clear plastic tubs. It’s a low-maintenance, cost-effective, and space-saving way to grow strong, hardy plants from seed.
🌱 How Winter Sowing Works:
- You plant seeds in containers filled with soil during the winter months (typically December–March, depending on your zone).
- These containers are left outside, exposed to natural temperature fluctuations and precipitation.
- The seeds stay dormant through the coldest months.
- As temperatures gradually warm in early spring, the seeds germinate naturally at the right time—no artificial lights or indoor setups needed.
