Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward
Draws on Greek mythology for its themes and structure, particularly the story of Medea, to explore the harsh realities of poverty and family in rural Mississippi during Hurricane Katrina. The novel highlights the resilience of the Batiste family as they face the storm, with the pregnant protagonist Esch mirroring the tragic figure of Medea as she navigates her difficult circumstances.
