Impresarios like P. T. Barnum created tours for leading European concert artists like Jenny Lind and Ole Bull, American composers were searching for a concert voice of their own, parlor songs were all the rage, and theater troupes like minstrel shows, wild west shows, and small opera companies brought shows across the country. Stephen Foster and Louis Moreau Gottschalk became the first Americans to be recognized worldwide for their music.
