Developing a Sound: 1600-1820's Many of those who settled in America brought their own music with them-primarily the English, the French and the Spanish. These were quickly mixed sounds of African and Caribbean to create a distinctively American diversity. Age old ballads and Baroque dance music echoed throughout the colonial period while in centers like Boston, Philadelphia, and Charleston the latest creations of Handel, Vivaldi and Haydn were enjoyed.
