Program Description

Event Details

Two hundred and fifty years after her birth, Jane Austen is a crossover artist: She is revered by scholars, who consider her a giant of English literature, and adored by fans, who treasure her novels and the many movies, TV series, and fanfictions based on them—not to mention the T-shirts, tote bags and fridge magnets that pay tribute to her stories. In her talk, Deborah Yaffe will introduce us to Austen’s life and work and discuss the quirky fandom that has grown up around this cherished writer.

Presenter: Deborah Yaffe, an award-winning newspaper journalist and author, has been a passionate Jane Austen fan since first reading Pride and Prejudice at age ten. Her book Among the Janeites: A Journey Through the World of Jane Austen Fandom is an entertaining, affectionate non-fiction look at this quirky subculture. Yaffe works as a freelance writer, has two adult children, and lives in central New Jersey with her husband and her Jane Austen Action Figure.
